The extraordinary story behind one of hip-hop’s most mysterious recordings is coming to Netflix with The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable, premiering Friday, October 16th, 2026. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Joanna Natasegara, the documentary examines the creation and controversial history of Wu-Tang Clan‘s secret album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, which became internationally famous after a single physical copy was sold for millions of dollars.

The documentary follows Tarik Azzougarh, professionally known as Cilvaringz, a Dutch-Moroccan rapper and devoted Wu-Tang fan who eventually became involved with the group’s inner circle. Over approximately six years, he helped develop Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, an ambitious musical project intended to challenge the increasingly disposable nature of music in the digital streaming era. The album was created as a single physical work of art, packaged in an elaborate silver case and sold at auction in 2015 for a reported $2 million. Its commercial release was restricted until 2103.

The film explores the creative decisions, business arrangements, and controversies surrounding the album while examining its significance within hip-hop culture. After premiering at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, the documentary is preparing for its streaming debut. RZA serves as an executive producer, alongside Joe Gebbia, Jason Ropell, and Abazar Khayami. Natasegara, whose previous work includes The White Helmets and The Edge of Democracy, makes her feature directorial debut with the project. The documentary also examines broader questions surrounding music ownership, artistic value, and the commercialization of creative work.

The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable offers hip-hop audiences a closer examination of an unconventional album that challenged traditional music distribution while reinforcing Wu-Tang Clan’s reputation for artistic experimentation.
