John Mayer is launching a new chapter in his recording career with the creation of Sob Rock Records in partnership with Mercury Records. The announcement also marks his return to solo music with “Tom and Jerry,” his first new solo single in five years.

According to Variety Australia, Mayer has established Sob Rock Records through a partnership with Universal Music’s Mercury Records. The label takes its name from his 2021 album Sob Rock, his final studio release under Sony Music. Mayer departed Sony in 2022 after a long relationship with the company.
His new single, “Tom and Jerry,” was scheduled for release Friday, October 23rd. The song marks his first new solo recording in five years. Although the label announcement signals renewed recording activity, Mayer has not officially announced a new studio album.
Mayer expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Mercury Records and its team, including executive Tyler Arnold. The partnership provides a new home for his upcoming recordings. It also represents an important business move as he resumes releasing solo material.
