#6-Linton Vassell (22-8, 1 NC) defeated #5-Tyrell Fortune (11-2, 1 NC) via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) at Bellator 271.

It was Linton Vassell holding center early, at least until Fortune fired a left hook full-force, missing but landing a right that trailed it. Vassell would then look for a takedown on the wrestler, getting on top and trapping one of Fortune’s wrists. With half a round remaining, Vassell began landing some big punches, but seemed to switch between ground n’ pound and a potential choke. Vassell would move to mount, take the back, and began landing more heavy punches as Fortune covered up.
After a hard-fought three rounds, Linton Vassell took the split decision win, securing his third straight victory in Bellator’s heavyweight division.
Linton Vassell made the following statements after his win:
“I am happy that I was able to out grapple a wrestler considering I’m from the U.K. and I have no wrestling background”
“I give myself a good 7. I am not 100 percent happy with my performance, but I am super happy with the outcome.”
“I was able to reverse him (Tyrell Fortune), get on top of him, and add some damage.”
“I used to watch WWE. When I first started to train, I did wrestling moves like that.”
“I always feel like we’re our own worst enemies. I wanted a knockout.”
“Tyrell was so strong and powerful. There were a few times where he just stood up and shook me off.”
“I went for the submission. I just carried on and tried to wear him down but couldn’t do it.”
