Meryl Streep nearly stepped away from acting before one of her most iconic roles.
According to People, Meryl Streep revealed she was “ready to retire” before taking on The Devil Wears Prada.
The 76-year-old actress said she was “ready to retire” before starring in the 2006 movie during an appearance on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle Wednesday, April 29. “They called me up and they made an offer, and I said, ‘No, not going to do it,’ ” Streep cheekily said in a joint interview with costars Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.
She initially turned down the role before ultimately agreeing—after doubling her salary request, which the studio accepted.
The film went on to become a defining moment in her career, leading to a new era of major roles and commercial success.
Streep is now set to reprise her role as Miranda Priestly in the upcoming sequel.
