Streaming giant Netflix is reportedly preparing a significant workforce reduction that could affect approximately 5% of its employees as the company evaluates its operations and future growth strategy. The potential restructuring could eliminate hundreds of positions across the entertainment and technology business, representing one of Netflix’s largest rounds of job cuts in recent years.
According to Variety, citing reporting from Puck, Netflix is considering layoffs that could affect roughly 5% of its workforce. The company reported approximately 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025, meaning a reduction of that size would translate to approximately 800 positions. The departments that could be most affected have not been identified, and a Netflix spokesperson declined to comment on the report. The proposed cuts should therefore be treated as reported plans rather than completed layoffs.
Netflix previously conducted major workforce reductions in 2022, eliminating approximately 450 positions during a period of changing subscriber growth. The company has since expanded its programming strategy to include additional live events and other entertainment offerings. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos has acknowledged that Netflix wants to accelerate growth, even as the company continues generating substantial revenue. Netflix is scheduled to report its third-quarter financial results on October 20th, 2026, an announcement that could provide additional insight into its business outlook.
The reported restructuring highlights the financial and operational pressures facing major streaming platforms as they balance content investment, audience engagement, and long-term profitability.
