Mariah Carey has secured a legal victory after a New York judge dismissed her brother Morgan Carey’s defamation lawsuit involving her bestselling memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. The case, which began in 2021, centered on allegations that statements in the book damaged his reputation.
According to TheWrap, a New York State Supreme Court judge dismissed Morgan Carey’s claims on October 19th. Morgan alleged that passages in his sister’s memoir portrayed him as violent and involved in drug dealing. He sought damages exceeding $20 million, claiming that the descriptions harmed his reputation.
Justice Leslie A. Stroth determined that Morgan had not sufficiently established actual malice, a required element of his defamation claims. Mariah’s attorney welcomed the decision and emphasized the importance of protecting authors who address matters of public concern. Morgan’s attorney disagreed with the ruling and indicated plans to appeal, meaning the legal dispute may continue.
