MGM+ is taking viewers back to the early days of Harry Bosch with its upcoming crime drama Bosch: Start of Watch, starring Cameron Monaghan as a younger version of the iconic detective. The prequel series, which also features Omari Hardwick, will premiere January 10, 2027, exploring Bosch’s beginnings as a rookie police officer in 1990s Los Angeles.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Bosch: Start of Watch will introduce audiences to a 26-year-old Harry Bosch, portrayed by Cameron Monaghan, as he begins his career with the Los Angeles Police Department after serving in the Persian Gulf War. The series will explore a previously underdeveloped chapter of the character’s history, focusing on his experiences as a uniformed officer. Set in the early 1990s, the story unfolds against a backdrop of racial tensions, gang violence, economic inequality and the events leading up to the Los Angeles riots.
The series also stars Omari Hardwick as Eli Bridges, Bosch’s training officer and mentor, alongside Ariana Guerra as fellow rookie Rosa and J.D. Pardo as Bosch’s foster brother Cory. Showrunner Tom Bernardo, who previously worked on Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, is leading the new installment. The production was filmed in Los Angeles to capture the city’s atmosphere and historical significance.
Monaghan takes over the role previously portrayed by Titus Welliver, who played Harry Bosch throughout the original series and its continuation. Although Welliver is not directly involved in the prequel, he has publicly supported Monaghan’s casting. MGM+ will debut the first two episodes on January 10, 2027, with additional episodes released weekly through February 21st.
