Acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler is bringing one of television’s most recognizable science-fiction franchises back to the screen as Hulu moves forward with his reimagining of The X-Files. The new series will star Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as FBI agents investigating unexplained phenomena, introducing a new generation of characters to the franchise’s world of mysterious cases and extraordinary encounters.
According to Deadline, Hulu has officially ordered Coogler’s The X-Files project to series following development of the pilot. The story follows two accomplished FBI agents with contrasting personalities who develop an unlikely partnership after being assigned to a previously closed division specializing in unexplained phenomena. Coogler wrote and directed the pilot, bringing his filmmaking experience to a property best known for its combination of science fiction, suspense, and investigative storytelling.
The original The X-Files, created by Chris Carter, premiered in 1993 and starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The series became a major television phenomenon and expanded into feature films and later revival seasons. Coogler’s version will introduce a different investigative partnership, with Deadwyler and Patel taking the lead roles. The new project follows Coogler’s success with films including Black Panther, Creed, and Sinners. Hulu has not announced a premiere date for the reboot.
Coogler’s reimagining of The X-Files offers an opportunity to expand the franchise’s legacy through new characters and contemporary storytelling while preserving its central fascination with mysteries beyond conventional explanation.
