Sherri Shepherd is making Broadway history with her highly anticipated debut as Genie in Disney’s Aladdin. The Emmy Award-winning comedian, actress and television personality officially stepped into the iconic role at New York City’s New Amsterdam Theatre, becoming the first woman to portray Genie in the Broadway production.

According to People, Shepherd made her historic debut as Genie on October 16, 2026. The former The View co-host embraced the character’s signature blue appearance and larger-than-life personality for her first performance. Her debut marks a milestone for the long-running Disney musical, which has traditionally featured male performers in the role.
Shepherd’s limited engagement will continue through January 3, 2027, at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Following her opening weekend performances, she is scheduled to begin a full eight-show weekly schedule on October 20, with select absences. The production features beloved songs from Disney’s animated classic and is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw.

The role marks Shepherd’s return to Broadway after previously appearing in Cinderella, where she portrayed the Evil Stepmother. Throughout her career, she has built a successful presence across television, film, comedy and theater. Shepherd hopes her portrayal of Genie will encourage young girls and women to envision themselves in roles traditionally associated with men.
