A new Black Panther is rising in Wakanda. Marvel Studios has officially tapped British actor David Jonsson to take on the iconic mantle in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 3, where he will portray the son of T’Challa and carry the franchise into its next generation following the death of original star Chadwick Boseman.

The coming-of-age film will spotlight Jonsson’s character, Prince T’Challa II, after he was introduced as a child in the franchise’s second installment, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Director Ryan Coogler, who also cowrote Black Panther and Wakanda Forever, will return to direct the third installment. Letitia Wright’s character, Shuri, who took over as the Black Panther in Wakanda Forever after Boseman’s death in 2020, and Winston Duke, who portrays M’Baku, will also return for Black Panther 3.
Jonsson’s casting was among several announcements Marvel made during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday.
Jonsson steps into one of the MCU’s most significant roles after building an acclaimed résumé that includes Industry, Rye Lane, Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk. His introduction as T’Challa’s son sets the stage for a new era of the Wakandan franchise when Black Panther 3 arrives in theaters December 15, 2028.
