Maya Hawke’s role in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping marks a full-circle career moment. The actress revealed that watching Jennifer Lawrence lead the original Hunger Games helped inspire her own acting ambitions years before she would eventually join the blockbuster franchise herself.

The actress, 28, stars in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping — the sixth installment in The Hunger Games film franchise— and she tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that the original movie played a large role in helping her figure out her career path.
“I credit the original Hunger Games movie a lot with inspiring me to want to be an actor, honestly,” Hawke, who lends her voice to the recently released Audible Original The Summer Oath, says.
Explaining that “it’s so hard to give a good performance in a big action movie,” because “so many pieces in the machine are usually working against the capacity to give a good performance,” Hawke praises Jennifer Lawrence, who starred as Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist of the original trilogy, as being a part of that inspiration.
Hawke will now get the opportunity to leave her own mark on the world that helped inspire her career, taking on the younger version of Wiress in Sunrise on the Reaping. Her casting turns a formative moviegoing experience into a major new chapter in her own filmography.
