LOS ANGELES, Calif. (July 1, 2026) — While music and entertainment remained at the heart of BET Experience 2026, the weekend also highlighted important conversations centered on health, education, and community. In recognition of National HIV Testing Day, attendees gathered for “Read the Room: Understanding the Landscape of Modern Sexual Wellness,” a panel focused on reducing HIV stigma and expanding access to sexual health education.
The discussion brought together writer and HIV advocate Ashley Cobb, actor and producer Nicco Annan, sexual health expert Shenee Howell, and Rashad Burgess, Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at Gilead Sciences. Moderated by Shannon Boodram, the conversation explored how culture, media, and technology influence the way people learn about and discuss sexual health.
One of the panel’s central themes was the growing role of digital platforms in shaping health education. Shan asked audience members where they typically turn when they have health-related questions, prompting many to acknowledge that their first instinct is to search online.
Burgess emphasized that storytelling remains one of the most effective ways to challenge misconceptions surrounding HIV. He encouraged more open and honest dialogue, explaining that increased visibility and education can help reduce stigma. Looking ahead, he shared an optimistic outlook, stating, “I believe we will see the end of the HIV epidemic as we know it in my lifetime.”
Annan reflected on the responsibility he feels as both an actor and producer to incorporate meaningful conversations into his work. He said he strives to create stories that entertain audiences while also encouraging them to think differently about issues affecting their communities.
When asked how creators can successfully approach sensitive topics, Annan offered a straightforward response: “You gotta do it in your own life.”
Throughout the discussion, Howell reinforced the importance of honest conversations, accessible education, and empowering people with accurate information about sexual wellness.
The panel demonstrated that BET Experience is more than a celebration of music and culture—it is also a platform for dialogue on issues impacting the Black community. By creating space for conversations about HIV awareness and sexual health, the event underscored the importance of education alongside entertainment.
