Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is returning to The Simpsons with a new voice. Indian American actor Sunil Malhotra is taking over the role previously performed by Hank Azaria, marking a new chapter for the long-running animated series.

According to The Guardian, Apu is returning to speaking roles after an eight-year absence. Azaria stepped away from voicing the character in 2020 following criticism of the portrayal’s racial stereotypes. Malhotra described the opportunity as a chance to reclaim the character while approaching his cultural identity with greater authenticity.
Malhotra initially expressed hesitation about accepting the role because of its controversial history. After discussions with the show’s creative team, he agreed to participate in Apu’s return. Janina Gavankar will also voice Apu’s wife, Manjula, as the series prepares to feature their family more prominently.
