Gwyneth Paltrow is returning to television in a leading role for Netflix’s upcoming drama The Apology. The A24-produced thriller has already received a two-season order, with acclaimed filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg attached to direct.

According to TheWrap, Paltrow will portray Evelyn Amspoker, a mother whose son was murdered 18 years earlier. When Evelyn and her husband learn that their son’s killer could receive a reduced sentence, they decide to intervene. The series explores the couple’s response to the possibility that the person responsible for their son’s death may be released sooner than expected.

Joe Murtagh created the series and will serve as writer and showrunner. Vinterberg will direct, with Paltrow also attached as an executive producer. Netflix has committed to two seasons, although a premiere date has not been announced.
