Tony Award-winning actress and singer Idina Menzel is reflecting on the emotional and physical challenges she experienced while filming the hit television musical series Glee shortly after becoming a mother. Speaking during New York Comic Con on Thursday, October 8th, 2026, the Frozen star revealed that she struggled with confidence and body image while portraying Shelby Corcoran, the biological mother of Rachel Berry, played by Lea Michele. Menzel explained that adjusting to motherhood while working on the popular television series created a difficult period in her personal and professional life.
Menzel recalled joining Glee approximately three months after welcoming her son, Walker Nathaniel Diggs, whom she shares with former husband Taye Diggs. Still breastfeeding at the time, she described the challenges of balancing her responsibilities as a new mother with the demands of television production. Menzel admitted that being surrounded by younger cast members while experiencing postpartum physical changes affected how she viewed herself. She also remembered struggling with her wardrobe and feeling uncomfortable with the contrast between her age and the character she was portraying.

“So my self-esteem was pretty low then,” Menzel recalled.
The actress previously discussed similar feelings in a 2023 interview, explaining that being cast as a mother to a character played by a much younger actress was difficult for her confidence. Despite those challenges, Menzel said she was excited about the opportunity to collaborate with television producer Ryan Murphy and become part of the successful musical series. Her reflections also highlighted the adjustments involved in returning to work after childbirth. Menzel welcomed Walker on September 2nd, 2009, and has continued emphasizing the importance of prioritizing her son while navigating her career and co-parenting relationship with Diggs.
Idina Menzel’s candid reflections offer insight into the personal challenges she faced while balancing new motherhood with her successful entertainment career. Her experience on Glee highlights the pressures performers can encounter while adjusting to major life changes, even during periods of professional achievement.
