Actor and former WWE superstar John Cena is addressing the future of the popular superhero television series Peacemaker, revealing that he understands why filmmaker and DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has shifted his attention toward other major superhero franchises. During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with host Josh Horowitz, Cena discussed his willingness to reprise his role as Christopher Smith while acknowledging the growing responsibilities Gunn faces overseeing the expanding DC Universe.

According to Variety, Cena explained that although he remains enthusiastic about portraying Peacemaker, he recognizes that Gunn must prioritize several major superhero properties as part of his leadership responsibilities. The actor reflected on the origins of the television series, which Gunn developed following his work on The Suicide Squad during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cena’s character originally appeared in the 2021 film The Suicide Squad before receiving his own HBO Max television series in 2022. The show’s second season premiered in October 2025, more than three years after its debut. When asked whether audiences had seen the last of Peacemaker, Cena declined to provide a definitive answer, indicating that the decision ultimately rests with Gunn. However, he emphasized his appreciation for their creative partnership and expressed his willingness to return whenever the filmmaker needs him.

The actor also acknowledged how Gunn’s responsibilities have expanded since becoming co-chief of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. With major franchises involving Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman requiring attention, Cena said he understands why projects involving the company’s most recognizable characters would take precedence. He noted that he would likely make similar decisions if he were responsible for overseeing the studio’s creative direction. Despite the uncertainty surrounding additional episodes of Peacemaker, Cena expressed admiration for Gunn’s filmmaking abilities and credited their collaboration with helping him grow as a performer. Meanwhile, Cena continues expanding his Hollywood career with Matchbox: The Movie, which opened in theaters on Friday, October 9th, 2026.

Although the future of Peacemaker remains uncertain, John Cena’s comments suggest he remains interested in returning to the DC Universe. His continued support for James Gunn reflects their established creative partnership as the filmmaker balances multiple projects within the expanding superhero franchise.
