Acclaimed actor David Oyelowo is celebrating his Nigerian heritage through the upcoming film Clarissa, a contemporary adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway. During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor discussed the importance of authentic African storytelling and his excitement about sharing the project with his four children.
Directed by brothers Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri, Clarissa transports Woolf’s literary narrative to modern-day Lagos, Nigeria. The film also stars Ayo Edebiri, Toheeb Jimoh, and Jude Akuwudike. Oyelowo praised the filmmakers for presenting a sophisticated and culturally authentic portrayal of Nigeria that international audiences may not commonly encounter in mainstream cinema.

The actor explained that filming in Nigeria felt like a homecoming, particularly because several cast members share West African ancestry. He also expressed enthusiasm about introducing his children to aspects of Nigerian culture they had not previously experienced. The film premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, later screened at the New York Film Festival, and is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on December 11th, 2026.
Through Clarissa, Oyelowo continues supporting projects that expand African representation in international cinema while highlighting the cultural richness and creative talent emerging from Nigeria.
