The Critics Choice Association (CCA) has announced that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard and acclaimed documentarian Jehane Noujaim will receive special honors at the 11th Annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards, taking place on Sunday, November 8th, 2026, at The Edison Ballroom in New York City. Howard will receive the prestigious Critics Choice Impact Award, recognizing his contributions to nonfiction storytelling, while Noujaim will be presented with the Pennebaker Award in recognition of her lasting influence on documentary filmmaking. Emmy-winning television personality Ross Mathews will host the ceremony, which will celebrate outstanding achievements across 18 award categories.
Howard will be recognized for his distinguished career as a filmmaker and his contributions to expanding the reach and visibility of documentary storytelling. His acclaimed nonfiction projects include We Feed People, Pavarotti, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years, and Jim Henson Idea Man. His Beatles documentary won Best Music Documentary at the inaugural Critics Choice Documentary Awards in 2016, while Jim Henson Idea Man received five Critics Choice Documentary Award nominations and won an Emmy for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Howard’s latest documentary, Avedon, exploring the life and legacy of renowned photographer Richard Avedon, premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and is scheduled for release on Netflix this fall. Through Imagine Entertainment, which he co-founded with Brian Grazer, Howard has also helped produce numerous documentary films and series, including Music by John Williams. Meanwhile, Noujaim will receive the Pennebaker Award, formerly known as the Critics Choice Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring filmmakers whose work has made a lasting contribution to the documentary genre. Her distinguished career includes The Square, Control Room, Startup.com, The Great Hack, and HBO’s The Vow. Her Emmy-winning documentary The Square earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature, making her the first Arab woman nominated in that category.
Noujaim’s work has consistently explored complex social and political issues through immersive, character-driven storytelling. Her recent projects include HBO’s The Man Will Burn, which premiered in July 2026, while her earlier documentary The Great Hack examined data privacy and political influence in the digital age. The Pennebaker Award is named in honor of documentary pioneer D A Pennebaker and will be presented by his widow and filmmaking partner, Chris Hegedus. Reflecting on the significance of this year’s honorees, Christopher Campbell, Vice President of Documentary at the Critics Choice Association, praised both filmmakers for their contributions to the art form.

“Documentary filmmaking has the extraordinary ability to illuminate our world through the people and stories that shape it, and this year’s honorees represent the very best of what the form can achieve,” said Campbell. “Ron Howard has brought his remarkable gifts as a storyteller to nonfiction filmmaking, finding the humanity at the heart of every story he tells and expanding the reach and visibility of the documentary form. Jehane Noujaim has spent her career immersing audiences in pivotal moments as they unfold, bringing an intimacy and immediacy to her filmmaking that has helped define contemporary documentary storytelling.”
