Tobe Nwigwe is preparing to enter a new chapter with “The Bridge,” his upcoming ninth studio album. Set for release October 9, the project explores the African diaspora and, more specifically, Nwigwe’s experience as an American-born child of Nigerian parents, continuing the Houston artist’s tradition of using music to explore identity, culture and community.

Tobe Nwigwe is set to release, The Bridge, his 9th studio album this fall on October 9. The work speaks to the experience of the African diaspora at large, with tones specifically on the Nigerian American experience.
Nwigwe appears to be tackling an experience that’s often overlooked within that diaspora: what it means to be American-born to parents born abroad, particularly American-born children of Nigerian parents.
It’s a perplexing identity, and one reflected in the plethora of features on the album, which includes a diverse cross-section of the diaspora, from the Caribbean, to Nigerian artists, to members of the African American community.
The album serves as a mosaic of the diaspora, but one that stays deeply personal to Nwigwe, who has described himself as African American, a first-generation American, Nigerian, and, most importantly, an Igbo son.
