Academy Award-winning filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is bringing his distinctive storytelling style to live theater with his first stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier, starring actor and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. According to AP News, the production will make its West End debut at London’s Phoenix Theatre, with preview performances beginning February 23rd, 2027, ahead of its official opening on March 18th, 2027. The project marks a major creative milestone for Tarantino as he expands his work beyond filmmaking.
Set in 1830s Europe, The Popinjay Cavalier is described as a swashbuckling comedy centered on deception, disguise, and adventure. Baron Cohen will portray Rupert Sebastian Thomas Jr., an ambitious performer whose journey to Paris takes an unexpected turn after he offends the French. The production draws inspiration from classic Hollywood adventure films and theatrical storytelling, incorporating elements of physical comedy, swordplay, and elaborate stage performances. Tarantino will both write and direct the production, bringing his signature approach to dialogue and unconventional characters to the stage. The play is being produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions.

The production also marks Baron Cohen’s West End debut, introducing the actor to a new theatrical audience after decades of success in film and television. Known for creating memorable characters such as Borat and Ali G, Baron Cohen expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Tarantino. The filmmaker, whose celebrated movies include Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Inglourious Basterds, has not directed a feature film since Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019. He also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming sequel, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt. The new stage production is currently scheduled to run through June 13th, 2027.
With Tarantino making his theatrical writing and directing debut and Baron Cohen taking on his first West End role, The Popinjay Cavalier represents an ambitious collaboration between two influential entertainment figures exploring new creative territory.
